The body representing pharmacies around Ireland is warning about the potential ill effects of misusing over-the-counter painkillers.

The body representing pharmacies around Ireland is warning about the potential ill effects of misusing over-the-counter painkillers.

The Irish Pharmaceutical Union says a survey it commissioned found a serious lack of understanding about the side effects of such non-prescription drugs.

It says the misuse of these products can lead to stomach ulcers, kidney conditions, liver failure and physical or psychological dependence.

The IPU is warning that just because certain pills are available without prescription does not mean they are not potentially harmful.
