Ecologists are warning that the wet summer has left some of the North's best-known beaches polluted with raw sewage and other waste sludge.

A Marine Conservation Society report says three well-used beaches at Newcastle, Ballyholme and Carnlough have missed EU standards.

It says storms swept raw sewage and rubbish out to sea and then back onto the sand.
