Motor racing fans flock to Phoenix Park

Thousands of fans today revved up for one of most prestigious motor racing events in the country.

Organisers of the Phoenix Park Motor Race were right on track to make the event as successful as ever, with 13 race classes competing on the 1.75-mile racing circuit.

Special attractions over the weekend included a Bugatti Veyron 16.4, one of fastest and most expensive cars in the world, two of John Watson’s Brabhams and a range of Crossle cars.

Racing legend John “Smokey” Rhodes celebrated his 80th birthday in style at the race, returning for the first time since he won The Park, Dunboyne and Kirkistown three times in the 1960s.

Meanwhile, racing fans tested their driving skills on Fordpark Raceway’s mega-slot car race track while spectators saw a selection of unique vintage and classic cars from yesteryear.

More than 80,000 racing fans attended the event last year, with organisers confident that the turnout today and yesterday was just as good.

“It has gone very well,” event spokeswoman Nicola Watkins said.

“We have had a huge turnout, a fantastic crowd.

“Everybody is enjoying some great motor racing. The track is dry and there have been no major incidents or accidents.

“It’s been a great success thanks to the organisers and people working over the day.”

Organised by the Leinster Motor Club, with Ann Stevens as clerk of the course, it is the second year the event has been organised for the drivers by the drivers.
