Louth Gardaí launch murder investigation

Gardaí have launched a murder investigation following the death of 33-year-old man on Thursday night.

The inquiry was upgraded to murder last night after the results of a post mortem examination found that the death was as a result of stab wounds.

Claudio Fernandes, who is originally from Brazil, was stabbed in the head with a boning knife on Main Street in Duleek on the July 29.

It is understood that Mr Fernandes, who had been living in Bellewstown, was involved in an altercation with another man when he sustained the injury

He was initially taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, but later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where he underwent surgery to remove the knife from his skull.

A 17-year-old youth, who has already appeared before Dundalk District Court, was arrested the following day and charged with assault causing harm and possession of a knife.

He is due back before the same court on Thursday next.
