PSNI probe 'sectarian' attack on car

Bricks were hurled at a car during a suspected sectarian attack.

The rear window of the Co Donegal-registered-car was allegedly shattered and an iron bar used to attack the vehicle during the incident on July 22 in Derry, Sinn Féin representatives have said.

LVF was allegedly daubed on it and the couple inside followed by the gang of up to 15 youths.

Police confirmed they were investigating an alleged bigotry motive.

The woman was from Burnfoot, Co Donegal and her partner was from Derry. They were both said to be shocked at their treatment and are expected to complain to Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan about the length of time it took officers to investigate.

A PSNI spokesman said: “We are investigating an incident that is alleged to have taken place at Benone Beach in the early hours of Sunday July 22.

“The report indicated that the rear window of a Seat car owned by a woman from Burnfoot in Co Donegal was broken by individuals among a group of about 15 young men and women.

“A silver Vauxhall Vectra car is believed to have been used by some of those in the crowd.”
