Govt pledges €230m for third-level research
The Government today pledged to invest €230m in research projects in 13 third-level institutions across the country.
Education Minister Mary Hanafin said targeted state resources had previously helped boost specialist areas like medicine, health, food science and climate change.
The latest funding will directly support 890 researchers as well as 200 post graduates, 100 post doctoral researchers, 50 principal investigators and 60 administrative and technical support staff.
“We will enhance the quality and critical mass of research teams working on various research initiatives,” said Ms Hanafin.
Minister of State for Innovation Policy, Michael Ahern said the investment will help Ireland progress further towards an innovation-led, knowledge-driven society.
The €230m funding will be added to by a further €33m from the 13 third-level institutions involved.
“This Government funding will enable Ireland to compete among the world’s most advanced knowledge economies,” added Mr Ahern.
A further €130m funding is available for third-level colleges and institutions through the Strategic Innovation Fund. Ms Hanafin today invited applications for the grants.
