Youths hurl petrol bombs at police in North

Police in the North came under attack from youths hurling petrol bombs and other missiles during violence in the North last night.

The trouble erupted in Magherafelt, Co Tyrone, at around 1am.

A man was arrested for public order offences but there were no injuries reported.

Chief Inspector Paul Douglas appealed for local residents to work with police in stamping out the anti-social behaviour.

“This is a situation that will not be tolerated, as it disrupts the lives of those decent people within the community who do not want to see this kind of needless behaviour and violence.

“This has a huge impact on the quality of life for local residents”.

Separate stand-offs developed in the Sperrin and Leckagh areas of the town and police remained in the vicinity until 7am.
