Man held after homeless Belfast man's murder

A man was arrested today for questioning about the murder of a homeless Englishman in Belfast.

Joe Souter, 37, died in hospital a week ago after an assault on the night of July 2.

Police said he was of no fixed abode but was originally from England.

The suspect, a man in his 30s, was detained at Dunmurry on the southern outskirts of the city, said a police spokesman.

Mr Souter had stayed at several hostels in Belfast and was attacked at the junction of High St and Victoria St.

Police have been seeking witnesses to the assault – or an attack a short time earlier in nearby Custom House Square.
