O'Loan seeks extra funds for Ombudsman investigations

The North's Police Ombudsman is calling for extra funding from the British government to help her office carry out its inquiries.

The North's Police Ombudsman is calling for extra funding from the British government to help her office carry out its inquiries.

The call is contained is Nuala O'Loan's last annual report before she leaves the job.

Ms O'Loan says the PSNI, the prosecution service and the forensic science service have all received extra funds to help them investigate past unsolved murders.

However, she says her office has been given no new money, despite the PSNI referring 40 extra cases for investigation.

She says this means the police have funding to investigate all other murders linked to the Troubles, but she has none to investigate murders the police themselves were allegedly involved in.

Elsewhere, Ms O'Loan also expresses grave concerns over the transfer of responsibility for national security to MI5 as her office will have no legal right of access to its documentation.
