Plans to restore bridge washed away by flood

Officials will today begin to draw up plans to restore a century-old bridge washed away by a flash flood in Co Galway.

Experts have yet to assess the full extent of the damage caused by heavy rain that swelled the Lahill River in the village of Leenane.

Archces supporting the bridge were swept away at around 5pm yesterday after heavy rain caused the freak conditions.

Motorists travelling between Westport and Connemara are facing a major detour following the collapse of the bridge.

The incident means motorists using the road now face a diversion of up to 80 miles to get from one side to the other.

Engineers are hoping to examine the structure today to see how long it will take to repair.
