Drop in number of women travelling to UK for abortions

The Crisis Pregnancy Agency has said it knows of about 200 women who have travelled to the Netherlands for abortions in the last year.

At the launch of its annual report in Dublin today, the agency said the number of women with Irish addresses who were going for terminations in the UK was dropping.

The number of births among teenagers is also down.

Calls are being made for counselling to be made available to all women who find themselves dealing with a crisis pregnancy.

The agency expanded its counselling services in 2006, bringing the number of centres providing counselling to 50.

Director of the Agency Caroline Spillane says every woman who experiences a crisis pregnancy should have access to counselling.
