President to greet unsung peacemakers

Unsung peacemakers from both sides of the Border will be hailed by President Mary McAleese in her front garden next week.

The head of state will greet community leaders and clergy at the Twelfth of July Party at Aras an Uachtarain on Thursday.

The Protestant holiday celebrates King William’s victory at the Battle of the Boyne and is marked by parades across the North.

“The 12th of July is a significant date in the calendar of the island of Ireland,” said the President’s spokeswoman.

“The Garden Party will focus on ordinary people who work behind the scenes to build peace and reconciliation across the political and religious divide.”

The event is one of several garden parties that will draw 1,500 guests over the next ten days.

The president tomorrow meets recipients of her President’s Gaisce Award from across the country.

Mrs McAleese will also greet representatives of nationwide community groups on Thursday and again next Tuesday.

A Family Garden Party on Saturday will feature children who have written letters and cards to the President over the past year, and their families.
