A fourth man has died overnight following an accident in Co Louth.

Three of the fatalities took place between midnight and 1am this morning.

Shortly after midnight in Co Louth, a 36-year-old man died when the car he was driving crashed into another car at Annavackey, Hackballscross.

A stretch of the N53 is closed and diversions are in place.

Elsewhere in the county a 38-year-old man was killed when his car lost control and hit a telegraph pole on the Rathmullen Road in Drogheda.

And in south Dublin, a 37-year-old man died after the car he was driving hit another car.

The crash took place on the Belgard Road in Clondalkin.

Meanwhile a man in his 80s died in hospital last night following an accident in Co Monaghan.

The pedestrian had been hit by a truck in Emyvale yesterday afternoon.
