Mr Blair is due to stand aside as British prime minister this afternoon and pass the reins to the new Labour leader Gordon Brown.

Speaking in the House of Commons this morning, Dr Paisley said he had shown persistence and patience in his dealings in the North.

In a statement to the media, meanwhile, Mrs McAleese thanked Mr Blair for his "extraordinary" commitment to the peace process, saying he had the gratitude of the Irish people.
