SDLP question suitability of North's new police Ombudsman

The new Police Ombudsman in the North is already attracting differing responses from nationalist and unionist politicians.

The British Government has appointed Al Hutchinson to replace when Nuala O'Loan leaves the job in November.

Two weeks ago, the former Oversight Commissioner was quoted as saying that people in the North should focus more on the future than on past misdeeds by the police.

Now the SDLP has said that this shows he is the wrong man for a job that is all about investigating the past.

The DUP, however, has welcomed his appointment and the police are believed to privately share this view.
