A man has appeared in court charged in connection with the biggest ever seizure of heroin by customs officials in this country.

Edward Anthony Farrell, with an address at Morning Star Hostel in Smithfield in Dublin, appeared at Enniscorthy District Court this afternoon.

The 32-year-old was arrested on Thursday of this week in Rosslare as he embarked from a passenger ferry coming from Cherbourg in France.

Customs officers discovered 10.6 kilos of heroin in a hidden compartment in the floor of the Nissan van he was driving.

The drugs have an estimated street value of €2.2m.

A spokesperson for the Revenue Commissioners said it was the biggest ever seizure of heroin by customs officials here.

Mr Farrell was charged with importing a prohibited substance, and dealing a prohibited substance, when he appeared in court this afternoon.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Friday.
