Two quizzed in connection with camper van hijack

Two men were being questioned today as part of a cross-border inquiry into a camper van hijacking.

The suspects were arrested after driving through a vehicle checkpoint in Meigh, south Armagh.

Police went to the scene on the Drumintee Road at around 5.30am after receiving reports that the van was on fire.

As they dealt with the blaze a Volkswagen Passat with two men on board failed to stop.

Officers managed to halt the car, detained the pair and recovered a number of items for further examination, a Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman confirmed.

The camper van is understood to have been hijacked across the border, near the Carrickdale Hotel. Its owners were assaulted.

Police in Newry said they were liaising closely with Gardaí.
