Factory fire prompts asbestos fear

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was today called to the scene of a factory fire after fears asbestos dust could have been released into the air.

Limerick Fire Service issued a public health warning to motorists in the Dock Road area of the city to keep their windows closed after the blaze broke out last night.

A fire service spokeswoman said the EPA was brought in to assess the air quality.

Limerick gardaí confirmed the road on which the factory is located has now been reopened.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.

Meanwhile fire fighters in Co Mayo are continuing to battle a forest fire which broke out last night around 3km from the controversial Corrib Gas terminal.

The blaze broke out at around 5pm and three units of the local fire brigade were sent to the scene.

The fire was initially brought under control late last night, but Coilte, the Irish forestry service, called the fire services this morning after the blaze reignited.

There are currently two units at the scene.
