A Cork general election candidate has today spoken of the experience of being followed by a documentary film crew on the campaign trail.
Cork North Central Independent candidate John McCarthy is one of eight candidates nationwide being trailed by Loosehorse Productions in the final week of the campaign.
The documentary is being filmed for RTÉ, and is focusing on one candidate from each of the major parties, as well as two Independents.
Speaking today, Mr McCarthy said he was delighted when approached by the production company.
“We’re up there with all the parties, so it’s a fair achievement,” he said.
“I think they saw that our campaign was making a real impression on people, and they wanted to take a closer look.”
As well as Mr McCarthy, the documentary will also focus on Mary O’Rourke (Fianna Fáil — Longford-Westmeath), Denis Naughten (Fine Gael — Roscommon-South Leitrim), Dominic Hannigan (Labour — Meath East), Frank McNamara (Progressive Democrats — Dublin South Central), Niall Ó Brolcháin (Greens — Galway West), Pearse Doherty (Sinn Féin — Donegal South West) and Jackie Healy-Rae (Independent — Kerry South).
Documentary producer David Joyce said the final film promised to be dramatic.
“We’ll be in the count centres with the candidates as well, so we’re hopeful that we might capture some exciting scenes,” he said.
The documentary will be broadcast in the autumn.
