US lawmakers could broker a deal next week to end the plight of up to 30,000 illegal Irish citizens, it emerged tonight.

Under the proposed legislation, the undocumented can secure residency status if they qualify for a new “Z visa” and pay a $5,000 (€3,700) fine.
