The Data Protection Commissioner has hit out at Irish security laws in his annual report.

Billy Hawkes has repeated his criticism of the 2005 laws which oblige telecommunication companies to retain everyone's mobile phone records for several years.

He said there should be a greater balance between people's right to privacy and these security laws.

Mr Hawkes believes the telecommunications law needs to be reworked.
