Kildare rapist remanded

A 25-year-old Kildare man who raped his sister has been remanded for sentence by Mr Justice Paul Carney at the Central Criminal Court.

He pleaded guilty to rape of his teenage sister on a date unknown between August 24, 2003 and August 24, 2006 at an address in Co Kildare. He cannot be named for legal reasons.

Mr Justice Carney declared him a sex offender pursuant to legislation and remanded him for sentence at a date to be set later.

When Mr Justice Carney said he was remanding the man in custody, Mr Denis Vaughan Buckley SC, prosecuting, told him the gardaí had no objections to bail being continued and Mr Roger Sweetman SC, defending, agreed that his client had always honoured his bail conditions.

Mr Justice Carney said he had intended to remand in custody because there were "mischievous people" who claimed in the print media and on the airwaves that he "forced rapists back out into the community" but he wanted it noted that bail was being granted in this case because there were no garda objections to it.

"Anybody who publicly claims the opposite will be in contempt of court and be answerable to me," he said.
