Two questioned in connection with crime boss killing

Two men were being quizzed tonight in connection with the double murder of one of Ireland's biggest drugs dealer and an innocent bystander.

Detectives arrested the men, aged 26 and 40, this morning in Finglas for the shooting of crime boss Martin 'Marlo' Hyland and plumber Anthony Campbell in December.

The men are being held at Blanchardstown and Finglas Garda stations under Section 30 Offences against the State Act, 1939.

They can be detained for 72 hours.

The shooting dead of a 20-year-old plumber's apprentice, who was working at the house where Hyland was staying in Finglas when the killers arrived, put massive pressure on the Government to tackle the escalation of gun crime.

Investigating officers said Mr Campbell, of St Michan's Flats, Greek Street, Dublin, was an entirely innocent party who was simply "in the wrong place at the wrong time".

It was believed the killers did not expect him to be in the house during their attack but shot him because he might have been a potential witness.

Hyland (aged 39) was originally from Cabra, Dublin, but was staying at his niece's house at Scribblestown Park, Finglas.

Mr Campbell's employer had left him alone working in the house as Hyland lay upstairs in bed.

When he returned to the property after collecting supplies he found his young employee and Hyland both shot dead.

It is believed Hyland was killed by members of his own gang and was aware his life was under threat.
