Tax payers owed millions: report
A new report is expected to confirm that thousands of tax payers here are owed millions of euros by the revenue commissioners, because they don't claim the credits, allowances and reliefs they're entitled to.
The survey by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance and the Public Service shows that, for example, as much as €50m is unclaimed in medical expenses each year.
Ignorance of the system is being blamed.
The Irish Taxation Institute, which represents tax advisors, say half of the country's two million PAYE taxpayers don't understand the tax system.
Meanwhile, the Dail and Seanad finance committee is promising a list of measures which it says would not only make people more aware of their entitlements but also encourage more of us to claim them.
