Galway Mayor seeks immediate upgrade of sewage plant

The Mayor of Galway is calling for the immediate upgrading of a sewage treatment plant in Oughterard amid fears that it may be behind the recent contamination of the local water supply.

Tests have found that the water emerging from the plan into Lough Corrib contains nearly 60 times the safe limit of cryptosporidium pollution.

Around 90,000 people in and around Galway city have had to boil all drinking water for the past few weeks because of an outbreak of a stomach bug caused by the parasite.

Mayor Niall O'Brolchain says the Oughterard plant was designed to serve 250 houses, but is now serving around 850 houses and is urgent need of upgrading.
