22-year-old inmate found dead in cell at Portlaoise Prison

A 22-year-old inmate has been found dead in his cell at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise this morning.

The man was found dead by prison officers at around 8.30am in a cell he was sharing with two others.

He is understood to have been serving a 15-month sentence for theft.

Gardaí and the Irish Prison Service have mounted separate investigations and a post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death.
