Galway Mayor seeks Govt help to improve water

The Mayor of Galway has called for Government assistance in helping the local authorities to upgrade water treatment facilities in the city and county.

The request follows the outbreak of a serious stomach bug among at least 125 people as a result of contamination of the local water supply.

Mayor Niall O'Brolchain has presented a five-point plan to the Minister for the Environment about how to address the problem.

He wants clean drinking water to be supplied free of charge in affected areas, as well as assistance to help local authorities develop modern and effective water treatment plants.

The call follows yesterday's confirmation that the water supply in Galway city and county is contaminated by both human and animal waste.
