Motor tax should be replaced by levy: Green Party

Motor tax should be scrapped and a new environmental levy on petrol and diesel is vital to reduce the number of gas-guzzler vehicles, the Greens said today.

Minister for Finance Brian Cowen announced in this year’s Budget that he was beginning a public consultation process on overhauling the Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) system to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
