Irish UN official escapes kidnap attempt in Gaza

An Irish man - who is a senior official of the United Nations in Gaza - has escaped an apparent kidnapping attempt.

John Ging was travelling in an armoured vehicle which was attacked by Palestinian gunmen.

The vehicle was hit eleven times, and the attackers attempted to gain entry by trying to force the door open.

Earlier in the week, the BBC's Gaza correspondent, Alan Johnston, went missing.

"We are reviewing our security arrangements here. We have been offered further support from the security services and we expect that the most important thing that will happen now is that the people who were involved in this incident will be arrested and brought to justice," said Mr Ging.
