Car drivers encouraged not to use Dublin port tunnel

City officials have encouraged car drivers not to use the new port tunnel in Dublin so that it doesn't become too crowded for lorries.

About 250 cars have been using the facility a day since it opened for them a week ago, yet it was primarily designed for heavy goods vehicles.

Given that HGVs will be banned in the centre of the capital from February 19, traffic director for Dublin City Council Michael Philips said it was especially vital to free the tunnel up for the trucks.

According to the council, almost 6,000 HGVs are using the tunnel daily.
