NI: Fatal crashes down by 41% at speed camera locations

In the North, the police have revealed that serious crashes causing death or serious injury are down by 41% around speed cameras.

Chief Inspector Brian Kee said the new cameras are now playing a major role reducing death by driving.

The police say speeding is the leading contributory factor in just over one in three fatal collisions.

Calling it a shameful statistic, Chief Insp. Brian Kee said the public should view it as seriously as drink driving.

There are four fixed camera sites, one average speed enforcement system, 31 mobile camera sites and 33 mobile camera routes in the North.

At the four fixed camera sites, death or serious injuries have fallen by a massive 74%.

In the three years before the safety camera sites were installed, there were 563 deaths. In the three years since that has fallen to 334.
