Fine Gael is calling for the age of retirement in the Defence forces to be raised.

Fine Gael is calling for the age of retirement in the Defence forces to be raised.

At present the retirement age for certain senior positions in the Army ranges from 56 to 63.

The opposition party says if the age of retirement for gardaí can be raised, then the same principle should apply to the Army.

Fine Gael Defence spokesperson Billy Timmons said that too many senior Army personnel are retiring when their expertise is still needed.
