Elderly man dies in Westmeath car crash
A man in his 70s has been killed in a car crash near Moate in Co Westmeath.
He was the driver of a car which struck a tree at Ballinderry shortly after 10am this morning.
As yet the man has not been named but he is believed to be a single man who lived locally. The man’s body was been taken to Mullingar Hospital.
He is the second pensioner to die on Irish roads in the past 24 hours.
A woman in her 80s died in hospital last night after being hit by a car while crossing the Coast Road in Laytown, Co Meath yesterday evening.
The latest fatalities take road deaths this year to 367.
Among the total killed was 171 drivers, 73 pedestrians, 82 passengers, 29 motorcyclists, and 10 cyclists.
