McDowell: Extended detention to allow more effective investigation

The Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has said that the doubling of the detention period for suspected criminals will allow for more effective investigation of crime.

Up until now, anyone arrested under the Criminal Justice Act could be held for up to six hours, with the possibility of a further six hour extension.
