Cassidy may be prevented from addressing Murphy inquest

State Pathologist Marie Cassidy may be prevented from giving evidence to the inquest into the death of Dublin teenager Brian Murphy, according to media reports.

The 18-year-old died six years ago following a fight outside Anabel's nightclub in south Dublin.

Former State Pathologist John Harbison, who carried out the post mortem, concluded that he had died from swelling of the brain caused by facial injuries inflicted during an assault.

However, Dr Cassidy later compiled another report concluding that his injuries were "relatively minor" and that the high level of alcohol in Mr Murphy's system was a contributory factor in his death.

Reports this morning say the inquest into the death may not hear Dr Cassidy's evidence due to questions over whether the coroner can call her as a third-party expert.

The uncertainty arises because Dr Cassidy did not examine Mr Murphy's body.
