Coroner pays tribute to men who died attempting Cork rescue
The West Cork Coroner has paid tribute to the heroic efforts of two Cork men who drowned in a rescue attempt last September.
Businessman Peter O’Keeffe and student Jonathan Herlihy died after coming to the aid of a young couple in difficulty off Owenahincha beach.
They succeeded in getting a lifebuoy to the pair, before being overcome by waves.
Coroner Colm Quigley said there was no greater courage than to give your life to save that of another.
He recorded a verdict of death by drowning for both men.
