New deal set to improve sharing of sex offenders’ details
Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has signed a new agreement with the British authorities today aimed at improving the sharing of information on sex offenders.
The memorandum of understanding will allow the Gardaí to track sex offenders coming to the Republic from the North and Britain.
Previously, gardaí were unable to formally monitor suspected child abusers who move to Ireland from the UK.
The ISPCC has welcomed today's agreement, but says it needs additional back-up to ensure the Gardaí are able to take measures when informed that an offender has entered the Republic.
