Investigation launched after man dies in garda custody
An investigation has been launched into the death of a man who was arrested in Waterford yesterday.
The 59-year-old man was arrested for a public order offence in Waterford city just before 2pm.
It is understood he was slightly unwell before he was taken to Waterford garda station, but he refused an ambulance.
While in Garda custody, the man's health deteriorated and he was rushed to Waterford General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
State Pathologist Doctor Marie Cassidy will carry out a post-mortem examination later today.
A technical examination is now taking place of the garda station where the man was held.
It is understood a garda Superintendent from Co Tipperary has been called in to investigate the circumstances of his death.
