Former Fianna Fáil TD and MEP Niall Andrews has died at the age of 68 following a long illness.

The ex-Dublin South TD passed away overnight in St Vincent’s hospital in the city.

Mr Andrews was first elected to the Dáil in 1977, where he served for 10 years before deciding to focus on his European career.

He was elected an MEP in 1984 and held the position up until his retirement in 2004.

His brother David is a former Minister for Foreign Affairs and his son Chris, a former Dublin City Councillor, is running in the next general election.

Mr Andrew’s nephew Barry is also a Fianna Fáil TD, while TV and radio presenter Ryan Tubridy is another of his nephews.
