Man accused of murdering pensioner goes on trial

A 37-year-old man went on trial this afternoon accused of murdering an 82-year-old retired council engineer in Mullingar just over a year ago.

Ian Kinahan, of no fixed abode, denies murdering Michael Creighton at the elderly man's apartment on Castle Street in the Westmeath town.

The State alleges that Mr. Kinahan tied the man up and beat him, leaving him for dead after failing to get money out of the 82-year-old's bank account.

It’s claimed Mr. Kinahan made six unsuccessful attempts in all to get money out of ATM machines around the time of the death.
