McDowell: We're staying in govt

The Tánaiste and Progressive Democrats leader Michael McDowell has indicated that his party will remain in government with Fianna Fáil despite intense speculation about a break-up of the coalition.

The speculation was prompted by the PDs' refusal to speak publicly about the Taoiseach's Dáil appearance yesterday to answer questions about the purchase of his home.

Mr McDowell was said to be furious that he was not give the information about the house in Drumcondra before he gave the Bertie Ahern his backing earlier this week.

Breaking his silence on the matter today, he said damage had been done as a result of the controversy surrounding Mr Ahern's finances - but that the damage could be repaired.

He said he would be continuing to talk to the Taoiseach about the matter and made it clear that the PDs and Fianna Fáil had a job to do in government.

Speaking in Limerick earlier, Mr Ahern said he wanted to get on with the business of government and would be happy to clarify anything Mr McDowell wanted to know in relation to his finances.

Former Tánaiste Mary Harney also played down talk of a coalition break-up, saying the issues surrounding Mr Ahern were serious, but all sides wanted to see them resolved successfully.
