Roche vows to expand pay-by-weight refuse collections

Minister for the Environment Dick Roche has promised to introduce measures to expand the use of pay-by-weight refuse collections.

Minister for the Environment Dick Roche has promised to introduce measures to expand the use of pay-by-weight refuse collections.

Mr Roche was responding to a Repak survey showing that the 28% of households which have access to such a system are saving an average of €95-a-year on their waste collection bills.

Eighty-four per cent of these households say the pay-by-weight system had encouraged them to recycle more.

However, only 14 local authorities across the country operate such systems.

Speaking in Dublin today, Mr Roche said he would be addressing this situation with the intention of getting more councils to switch over to pay-by-weight.
