Pay-by-weight households saving money on bin charges
A new study has found that householders who use pay-by-weight waste collection systems save nearly €100 a year on their bin charges.
The research by the recycling firm Repak is being released today to coincide with the beginning of National Recycling Week.
Repak says the 28% of households who have access to pay-by-weight systems are saving an average of €95 a year, while 84% of them say the system has encouraged them to recycle more.
Only 14 local authorities have introduced the system, while private operators have mostly overlooked the directive.
Repak is calling on county and city councils to do more to introduce such systems nationwide.
