McDowell facing Dáil quiz about payments controversy

The Tánaiste Michael McDowell is expected to face tough questions from the opposition today about his stance on the payments received by the Taoiseach in 1993 and 1994.

The new Progressive Democrats leader is due to take the Order of Business in the Dáil this morning after breaking his silence last night to express support for Bertie Ahern.

Mr McDowell said Mr Ahern's decision to accept £39,000 from wealthy businessmen and friends was "ill-advised" and an "error of judgement".

However, he also said he accepted that the Taoiseach's actions were "neither dishonest nor corrupt".

The opposition has already responded by accusing Mr McDowell of being more interested in remaining in office than ensuring ministers and politicians are accountable to the people.

The Taoiseach, meanwhile, is expected to face further media questions about the controversy when he visits Co Cavan today.
