Changes to taxi fare to be introduced later today
The controversial new changes to national taxi fares are due to be formally unveiled by Taxi Regulator Ger Deering later today.
The new national fares structure and the abolition of the Dublin airport surcharge sparked off angry protests from drivers in recent weeks.
Taxi unions have called on Ger Deering to postpone the changes saying he has failed to issue a single driver with a new fare display card.
Head of the National Taxi Drivers Union Tommy Gorman says only half of drivers in the country have had new metres sealed to implement the new fares which will start at between €3.80 and €4.10.
He believed customers will be angered by the fact that not one driver has a display card to inform them of the new fares.
“For me, tomorrow is going to be a very confusing,” he said. “I hope Ger Deering keeps his phone lines open to deal with complaints from the public,” he said
