Minister calls for Coastguard service volunteers

The Junior Minister for Transport Pat the Cope Gallagher has appealed for more people to become volunteers with the Coastguard service.

There are 54 units across the country, with 82 full time staff and almost a thousand volunteers.

Earlier this month, the coastguard was heavily involved in the search operation for two men missing off the Cork coast.

And at least one unit is called out each week to assist in search and rescue operations.
