Severe flooding after heavy rainfall

Parts of Monaghan and Cavan were severely flooded after heavy rainfall today.

Firefighters were called to pump flood water out of a number of premises near Castleblaney.

Serious flooding was also reported in the Clones and Ballybay areas of Co Monaghan and in low-lying areas near Cootehill and Shercock in Co Cavan.

Some farms were left underwater.

“We had very bad flooding last night,” said Monaghan Senator Francie O’Brien.

“In Castleblaney the fire brigade was called to relieve flooding on the N2 close to the chapel. I have to say they did a magnificent job."
