Armed gang in drive-by shooting

Gardaí were today hunting an armed gang after a drive-by shooting in the village of Ballyneety, Co Limerick.

A number of shots were fired at a man in a van as he drove along the R512, the Limerick to Bruff Road.

The attack occurred at around 12.10pm and no-one was injured.

It is understood the shooting is part of the increasingly bitter and bloody feud between rival crime gangs in Limerick city.

On Sunday night a 21-year-old man was murdered as he sat in a car with another man in the Moyross area when a gunman pulled up on a motorcycle and fired several shots.

A man in his 20s arrested yesterday in connection with the shooting is still being questioned in Mayorstone Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

A week ago, also in Moyross, a four-year-old boy and his sister, six, suffered serious burns after the car in which they were sitting was doused with petrol and set alight.

Gardaí at Roxboro Road Garda Station are investigating and the main street of Ballyneety has been sealed off and will be technically examined.

Officers are appealing to anyone who was in the area between 12.00pm and 12.30pm and who may have witnessed the shooting to contact them at Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061 214347.
