Man dies in Limerick shooting

Gardaí are investigating a gun attack in Limerick dity overnight in which a 22-year-old man was killed.

The victim was sitting in a car with another man in the Moyross area at 10.45pm when a gunman pulled up on a motorcycle and discharged shots.

The incident happened in the Pineview Gardens estate area and gardai believe it may be linked to an ongoing feud between rival gangs.

The dead man was known to gardaí.

The victim, who was from the Delmege Park area of the city, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardai are now looking at CCTV footage of the area.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out on the man’s body later today.

Local independent councillor John Gilligan called for dedicated 24-hour garda patrols in the area.

“This is so that they don’t have to respond from stations across the city, they are actually in the area.”

He added: “Nobody has a right to take this young man’s life.”

Paying tribute to the murder detection rates of Limerick gardai, he added: “I’m absolutely convinced that justice will be done in this case.

“It must be remembered, drugs in Ireland is a billion-dollar business. Anybody who is going to step in the way of some of these guys – they will kill anybody, without compunction.

“You walk away from the evil things that have happened there. There is a huge community effort working away behind the scenes.

“The people of Moyross must recognise that they are not going to be abandoned. The people who have brought such terror to their area over the last number of years, they will not hold sway.

“No matter what happens, they are simply not going to cut off the people of Moyross and leave them to their own devices, or to the drug barons, who will incinerate children.”

A week ago in Moyross, a four-year-old boy and his sister, six, suffered serious burns after the car in which they were sitting was doused with petrol and set alight.
