A man has been arrested following a security alert at Dublin Airport.

Gardaí said a firearm was discovered in his hand luggage.

The man, who is Irish and in his mid-20s, was a passenger on a charter flight to Egypt with the tour company First Choice.

He was going through security screening into the departure lounge when an item in his hand luggage aroused suspicions among security staff.

The man was prevented from boarding his plane and the Gardaí were called.

When they searched his bag, they found a handgun.

The man was arrested and taken to Santry Garda Station, where he is being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

The man's cargo luggage was also removed from the plane.
